The Old Ship Inn, located in the heart of Dorchester, has the proud title of the oldest pub in Dorchester. In its central location, the Old Ship has weathered many turbulent years through fires, plague and wars yet still remains at the center of a thriving community. Conceived around the year 1600, much of the original front elevation of the property, including the two first floor original oak windows, remain. However, fashions and progress have moved around the pub layout over the years to fit in with these changing trends. In the early 1930's a section of the mantel from what is thought to be one of the original fireplaces, was removed to the Dorchester Museum where it is now displayed along with some original oak paneling taken from the wall. The decorative features of the mythical "green man" are clealy in evidence. Despite the changes, the Old Ship has maintained its contemporary style, keeping pace with new demands and desires to remain a popular and satisfying destination for locals and visitors alike.
